I was thinking about time again, how it flowed through my fingers.
I was only clutching at air.
I remembered the garden, how your hand would reach out to cup the roses
and you’d turn your face towards mine. You’d ask, “Aren’t they beautiful?”
There’s a space between my breath and yours.
In that emotion, many words go unsaid. I observe how thoughts appear as clouds only to drift. These are our seasons.
There are many topics we didn’t get the chance to discuss. I never learned your opinion about artificial intelligence. I do hear you laugh. Not as a terrible sound in my head, but a sense of safety, like we were thinking the same thing, shared a glance, and moved on with our day.
I suppose there will always be questions about honour and what it means to live with integrity.
How many calculations are involved in telling the truth?
I have often wondered about Kant’s categorical imperative against lying. A soldier shows up at your door. He asks if you’re hiding his opponent in an attic. Kant requests you don’t lie. You say, “Yes, there is someone hiding in my attic.” Perhaps Kant said this because the moral imperative to be honorable is on the solider from that point on.
There is a hierarchy of moral duties in this world. It’s fascinating to think about, especially when considering misconceptions. A lot of my current work is on echo chambers. One complaint against AI is that it can create a feedback loop. Well, so can humans who don’t make a point of engaging with perceptions and frameworks that aren’t theirs.
An ethical framework or thesis is offered through the comparison of ideas. That is the space I mentioned at the beginning of this piece. It’s a hint towards experience. Machine learning happens through data. Incredible amounts of data. However, it can’t measure what it does not have access to.
That’s the value of experience. Visceral sensations. Physical. Clutching at air. Boarding a plane. Waiting for a taxi. Holding your finger up or learning how to whistle to claim attention. Before the digital world began to transcend human contact. It made so much progress towards efficiency.
I was walking almost a decade ago now. I was walking and I saw a wall where someone had painted this phrase: Efficiency is the enemy of magic.
I crack my knuckles. I hear music through my wireless headphones. I feel my body. It’s slightly cold. I should wear socks. I need to go for a walk.
